چکیده

Semantic priming is a phenomenon that occurs when a semantically related ‘‘prime’’ word produces a faster response time to a sequentially presented ‘‘target’’ word than if they were semantically unrelated. This process of priming is thought to involve two distinct processes, one that is reflexive and unconscious, and the other, which is voluntary and intention-driven. It is believed that a dysfunction in one or both of these processes may result in the pattern of thought disorder in schizophrenia. In an attempt to better understand disorganized speech and thought disorder, we examine language processing in schizophrenia by separately studying reflexive and voluntary priming processes using a lexical decision semantic priming task, that is similar to the landmark study with controls by Neely [(1977). Semantic priming and retrieval from lexical memory: Roles of inhibitionless spreading activation and limited-capacity attention. Journal of Experimental Psychology, 106, 226–254]. In two experiments, we tested a total of 40 schizophrenic and 40 control subjects. In both Experiments 1 and 2, schizophrenic subjects showed greater semantic priming than control subjects in the reflexive task condition, demonstrating that they seem to exhibit excessive priming of the semantic network. On the other hand, in our study, there were no differences in priming between schizophrenic and control subjects in the voluntary task condition. These results support the idea of a dysfunction in the reflexive system (hyper-priming) as a core deficit in language processing in schizophrenia. r 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract Objectives: The present study was designed to investigate the automatic activation of seman-tic priming in schizophrenic patients. Method: 36 schizophrenic patients and 36 normal sub-jects participated in two experiments. In experiment one, the effect of semantic relation on iden- tification of degraded targets was examined between a series of single prime words and single target words...

Increased automatic spreading of activation in thought-disordered schizophrenic patients.

Previous research on semantic priming in schizophrenia has produced conflicting findings. While several studies provided evidence for an enhanced cognitive spreading of activation in schizophrenia patients with formal thought disorder, other research has failed to replicate. The aim of the present study was to resolve some of the ambiguities in the literature. Thirty-two schizophrenic patients ...

Semantic hyperpriming in schizophrenic patients: increased facilitation or impaired inhibition in semantic association processing?

Previous studies analyzing semantic priming in schizophrenic patients have reported conflicting results. In the present study, we explored semantic priming in a sample of schizophrenic patients with mild thought disorders. We wondered if distinct cognitive processes, such as facilitation and/or inhibition, underlie semantic hyperpriming and are variously impaired in schizophrenic patients. Usin...

Direct and indirect semantic priming with neutral and emotional words in schizophrenia: Relationship to delusions

Introduction. Evidence is accumulating that suggests that semantic networks are abnormal in schizophrenia. Methods. To investigate this further, we examined priming in 42 schizophrenics and 28 normal controls on a lexical decision task involving three different prime-target conditions all at 700ms stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA): directly semantically related, indirectly semantically related, a...

Investigating Thought Disorder in Schizophrenia: Evidence for Pathological Activation

BACKGROUND Previous research has yielded evidence for enhanced semantic priming in formal thought-disordered schizophrenia patients, a result that fits well with the hypothesis of disinhibited processes of spreading activation in this population. OBJECTIVE The current study examined whether hyper priming among schizophrenia patients is an outcome of further spreading of activation of a node o...
